Pop Group Random Fact - Interesting!

The members of the pop-rap group LMFAO are actually uncle and nephew!

RedFoo and SkyBlu are better known as Stefan and Skyler Gordy. Stefan is actually eleven years older than his nephew Skyler, and both are descendants of famous Motown record label founder Berry Gordy. Berry was best known as the first African-American to own a label, and Motown Records was best known for signing the Jackson 5. Little did Berry Gordy know that his son and grandson would team up to form a hip-hop group nearly half a century later!

Spider Phobia Random Fact of the Day

The more afraid you are of a spider, the bigger it seems to you!

Michael Vasey, professor of psychology at Ohio State University, found in his research that if you're afraid of spiders, you tend to perceive spiders as bigger than they really are. This may feed your fear, and make it difficult to overcome.
It has been found that spider phobia affects 1 in 6 males and about half of all females. Participants of the study were asked to estimate the size of the spiders after each encounter. Researchers found that participants who were most afraid of spiders, also estimated the tarantulas' sizes to be largest

Exciting happenings in 601!

This week we had the opportunity to present "Identity Bags" for our peers.  This was a great way to learn even more about each other!
In Science, we have been learning about classifying living things.  Pictured below are students in 601 sorting things found outside on our playground.

Agenda - Tuesday

It has been scientifically proven that the less you know, the more you think you know.

This is known as the Dunning-Kruger effect. The basic idea behind it has been a well-established rule for centuries. Charles Darwin, for instance, has stated "Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge". It has been empirically proven in 1999, by psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger in their report "Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments".

This was proven through a study in which participants take tests of their logical reasoning skills, grammatical skills, and humor, and then estimate their own abilities in those subjects. Those participants who scored in the bottom quartile grossly overestimated their own abilities. Those in the12th percentile had estimated themselves to be in the 62nd percentile.

Overall, Dunning and Kruger found that incompetent people overestimate their own skill level, fail to recognize the skill of other people and fail to recognize their own inadequacy. Also, as they receive training to improve their skills, incompetent people tend become more aware of their own inabilities.

Random Fact of the Day for Wednesday

THIS IS CRUEL: Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is the fear of long words.

There are a lot of interesting and random phopias out there. Dendrophobia is the fear of trees. Blennophobia is the fear of slime. And neophobia is the fear of anything new. However, the fear of long words may have the most ironic (and cruelest name).
Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia. So let’s say you do have this phobia. You’d be terrify to name your ailment. Kind of a conundrum.

15 Facts That Will Change How You See Candy

The Chocolate River in Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory was made from real chocolate, but it’s not as delicious as you may think!

Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory may be every child’s dream—unlimited amounts of candy and chocolate for your eating pleasure, magical workers and a hilarious guide in Willy Wonka himself. Too bad it’s not a real place. However, some of the actors may have not felt so lucky.
While a lot of the set was made of actual food, it wasn’t as appetizing as it appeared. One of the most notable set pieces was the chocolate river that runs through the factory. This river was actually made of chocolate, water and cream. While that sounds delicious, it actually spoiled quickly with the cream in it. When it spoiled, it smelled foul. Probably wasn’t fun to shoot scenes with a horrible smell in the air.
