Hi All!
My apologies if any of these addresses are incorrect or if I'm sending this to anyone twice (or three times). Last week I sent out an e-mail survey asking if anyone is interested in doing a gift exchange in our classroom. Since the majority answered "yes", we WILL go ahead with an exchange. I'm getting a lot of questions about what this will look like. I hope this will answer most of them.
If you/your child wishes to participate in the exchange, please send a gift on Thursday (between $5-$10). Boys will bring a "boy" gift and girls a "girl" gift. (Or gender neutral!) Please indicate somewhere on the wrapping the gender of the intended recipient!)
We will do a fun type of exchange on Friday at our potential party afternoon. (Dependent upon how the next few days go). This would be the time to send Christmas goodies if you're so inclined. (I promise I won't complain :))
If you have any other questions, please reply to this e-mail and I'll answer as soon as I have a second!

Margarine - Random Fact
It’s illegal to serve margarine instead of butter in Wisconsin.
Wisconsin, which is known for its dairy products like butter, actually banned the sale or use of margarine colored to look like butter back in 1895. The law wasn’t repealed until 1967 after a Wisconsin State Senator and butter enthusiast underwent a blind taste test and discovered that margarine tasted better.
From 1967 until now, it’s still been illegal to serve margarine as a replacement for butter in diners. Breaking this law is punishable by up to 3 months in jail, though that’s never been enforced. The law also requires that butter be served in Wisconsin’s schools and at state institutions, including prisons.

Jaywalking
Bogota had a big jaywalking problem. We guarantee you'll laugh at the mayor's solution.
If you're from Latin America (like I am), you'll know that jaywalking is a pretty big problem there.
Even when people have perfectly good and safe ways to cross the streets, they'll still jaywalk, leading to more traffic and less safety.
This is exactly one of the problems that Antanas Mockus, a political newbie elected to be mayor of Bogota, decided to tackle.
He realized that one of the most powerful motivators for people was social pressure.
This gave him a crazy, but effective idea. He hired mimes to hang out on busy intersections. Anytime they saw a jaywalker, they would follow them around, mimic them and mock their behavior. What was the result?
The people being mocked obviously felt embarrassed and didn't do it again. But it also had another effect: The bystanders didn't want to be mocked themselves, so they started obeying pedestrian rules.
The program was so successful that the program was expanded from 20 mimes to over 400! This mayor has a lot of really fun and interesting ideas to solve problems. To read more about the way he governs, read the source.

Space Elevator
By 2050, there might be a Japanese elevator to space
Decades ago, people only dreamed about traveling to space. Then they only dreamt about landing on the moon. Both of these became reality though. And then humans built a space station. So it would make sense that things that we can only dream about today will someday be real. One such thing is an elevator to space. Sound crazy? The Japanese are currently working to create just that. More specifically, Obayashi Corp is hoping to build an elevator to space by 2050.
The contraption would carry passengers to space at 124 mph and deliver them to a space station 22,000 miles above the earth. This trip would take a little longer than a week to complete. A cable would be anchored on earth and stretch to an altitude of 60,000 miles above earth (about halfway to the moon). At the end of the cable would be a counterweight that would anchor the cable in space. Will this ever happen? Will people travel to space like they currently travel to the top of a skyscraper? Only time will tell.

Books can shorten your prison sentence if you are a Brazilian!
Brazilian prisoners can shorten their sentence by reading books!
Brazil’s federal corrections program recently began a program that attempts to potentially shorten their sentences and combat the extremely low literacy rates in prisons. For each book read, four days are taken off of the sentence for the year, with a maximum reduction of 48 days per year.
All the inmate has to do is read a book and write a book report, which is then submitted for evaluation. It is formally called the “Redemption through Reading” program and it seeks to give convicts a different view of the world outside while educating them for a better life afterward.
