Sleep random fact

Losing sleep can really add up. Find out how to get back to a restful life!

How much sleep did you get per night last week? Probably less than the 8 hours that experts recommend. If you think that just getting in one good, solid day of rest is enough the tip the scale back into balance, you may owe the sandman more time than you thought.
Sleep debt is the difference between the amount of sleep you ought to be getting per night, and the amount you actually get. The deficit doesn't just get wiped every week when you get a couple extra hours in bed on Sunday morning. It continues to grow every time we skimp even a few extra minutes a night.
The average American gets about 6.9 hours of sleep a night, on average. That means an hour of sleep a night is lost, resulting in two full weeks per year—and you'll start to feel it. Impaired vision, foggy brain, poor driving, and forgetfulness are all symptoms of sleep deprivation. Luckily, it can be reversed.
Go to bed when you're tired and wake up naturally, no alarm clock. Expect about ten hours of sleep a night, giving you a catatonic feeling, but your need for sleep will gradually decrease. Find the balance and you'll live an alarmless life from here on out.

Crying Random Fact

When you cry, you are feeding your cornea with nutrients!

The human eye is one of the more complex organs of the human body and features some characteristics that are totally unique. The eye itself consists of a number of components and is responsible for light perception, vision and depth perception. It does all this by focusing light from the outside world through the cornea and onto the retina at the back of the eye.
For one's vision to be clear, the cornea needs to be totally transparent—so much so that it can not even contain any blood vessels. Nevertheless, he cornea is still made up of living cells and they need oxygen and nutrients to survive.
The cornea therefore takes its oxygen directly from the air. It does this by first having the oxygen absorbed by the tears, from where the cornea extract it. Nutrients are also supplied to the cornea via the tears through the process of diffusion.
So, next time somebody finds you crying, just tell them you are feeding your cornea.

NFL Random Fact

During a typical NFL game, the ball is only in play for 11 minutes!

During a typical NFL game, the ball is only in play for 11 minutes!

Yes. For every 3 hours you spend sitting on the couch watching an NFL game, you are only witnessing about bathroom break’s worth of actual football being played! What’s worse - 56% more of a broadcast’s time is devoted to things you have already seen - replays! On average, an hour of the program is spent on commercial breaks and up to 75 minutes (60% of the total time) shows players walking around between plays, huddling, or just standing at the line of scrimmage! Remarkably, shots of cheerleaders are only shown for an average three seconds, while coaches and referees receive around 7% of the total facetime of an NFL game!

I know what you’re saying - “that can’t be right, a single quarter of an NFL game is 15 minutes long!” But American football is not like most other sports. In football, the clock often keeps running regardless of the level of activity on the field. Look at it this way - a typical NFL play takes up about 4 seconds of clock time, but the players are allowed TEN TIMES this interval to just mill about behind the line of scrimmage! In fact, wasting time in this fashion and cheating viewers out of any potential action becomes a strategic advantage for the team that is ahead near the end of a game!

Cockroaches

Cockroaches can life for up to 30 days after their head has been cut off.

Cockroaches can live for 30 days after their head has been cut off.

While it is more average for a cockroach to only live headless for 9 days or so, they can live for extremely long amounts of time. Cockroaches breathe through spiracles, which deliver air to each cell of the body through a set of tubes called tracheae. The brain does not control the breathing through the spiracles. So they don't need a head to breathe!

Also, the cockroach does not have blood pressure the way a mammal does, so cutting off the head does not lead to uncontrolled bleeding. What about food? They need much less food - single meal is enough to last them a whole month! This ability isn't all its cracked up to be, however - without a head, the cockroach would just sit around without doing much.

Elephants are the only land mammals that cannot jump.

Elephants are the only land mammals that cannot jump.

Unlike all other mammals on earth, Elephants do not have kneecaps. Therefore, they are unable to bend their legs and acquire the needed propulsion to leave the ground. They are not, however; the only mammals that can't jump. After all, whales are mammals too.

Google Random Fact

Google unsuccessfully tried to sell itself in 1999 for $1 million

Remember Excite.com? Neither do most people. However, they were big cats in the search engine business right before the year 2000. Back then, Google was not the behemoth it is nowadays; in fact, it was still a project from Stanford Graduate students who thought it was taking too much time that would be better spent studying.

Sergey Brin and Larry Page, the creators of Google then went to Excite and tried to sell him the search engine for $1 million. Apparently this was a laughable proposal for then CEO, George Bell. He not only rejected their offer, he also threw an Excite venture capitalists out of his office when he tried to negotiate them down to only $750,000! This has gone down in history as one of the dumbest business decisions ever.

Every year, about 6000 US patients have surgical tools left inside them!

Yay health care system. Thousands patients every year in America take a little souvenir home from their surgery. Occasionally, we hear about forceps, clamps, and hardware showing up in X-Rays but generally these are not the problem. Most of the time, it’s the gauzy, cotton sponges used for soaking up fluids that doctors leave in their patients.
The consequences of this are not pretty. Many patients suffer for months or years from pain, digestive problems, etc. Before anyone notices. But usually, by the time the doctor’s little mistake is picked up on, an infection has already formed. The complications from these infections can and often do last a lifetime. Some people lose parts of their intestines, others their lives.
Yet despite all this, thousands of hospitals and surgical centers have failed to adopt technologies that will eliminate the risk of leaving sponges in their patients.

There isn't any peanut butter in Reese's Pieces...

Manufactured by the Hershey Company, Reese’s Pieces peanut butter candy’s claim to fame is probably most notably it's appearance in the 1982 movie E.T. as the little ‘guy’s’ favorite candy. It followed Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and was designed to capitalize on it's forerunner’s success.
Originally the plan was to fill the candy with peanut butter, but the oil leaking into the shell made it soft instead of crunchy. The problem was outsourced to a team of scientists tasked to come up with a solution. They created a peanut-flavored penuche filling. Penuche is a fudge-like candy. It is made with brown sugar, butter and milk.
The next step was to figure out how thick the shell needed to be. The last step was to decide on the colors of the candy coating. It was designed to match the colors of the package and the goal distribution of candies in the packets is 50% orange, 25% brown and 25% yellow.
Although the candy was manufactured by the Hershey Company for the North American market, they are also available in Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Do not get too excited if you suffer from nut allergies - Reese’s Pieces still contain partially defatted peanuts!
The Pieces product line now includes York Peppermint Pattie Pieces, Almond Joy Pieces and Hershey’s Special Dark Pieces.

No Fear

A woman cannot feel fear because of a missing structure in her brain.

This woman is incapable of feeling afraid, but says she does feel other emotions. The reason for this strange condition is that the woman is missing a portion of her brain called the amygdala, which has been shown to help with emotional learning. The woman says that she has been threatened with a knife and held at gunpoint but did not feel the least bit afraid in either situation. Researchers tested her by having her handle dangerous snakes and a tarantula at a pet store and attend scary movies - she was never frightened!

The drawback to this "ability" is that she is also unable to process danger around her and subsequently avoid it - in reality, she is quite lucky to be alive! Researchers hope that by studying this woman they may find a way to treat patients with posttraumatic stress disorder.

My Pet Cricket

In China children actually keep crickets as pets!

But crickets are involved in much more like in a Chinese pastime called “Cricket Fighting” where male crickets fight just like in cockfighting, and bullfighting.
Cricket fighting started more way back 1,000 years ago! Cricket fights are held at famous hotels throughout China, and although it is illegal to bet on the fights, the fights themselves are not illegal.
In India, crickets are as praised as a cows are, and funerals are held when a cricket dies including a coffin made out of bamboo.

Random Facts

No one has blue eyes!

As you look closely in the mirror trying to disprove this, physics explains how this is possible. Your eyes appear blue in the same way that the sky appears blue- scattered light. The iris, which is responsible for eye color, has three layers. Each layer has different color pigments such as yellow or brown which, when combined, make hazel and brown eyes.

But blue and grey eyes have a brown pigment in one small layer of the eye and as light bounces off of the iris, creates a blue color due to its short wavelengths!
