Manufactured by the Hershey Company, Reese’s Pieces peanut butter candy’s claim to fame is probably most notably it's appearance in the 1982 movie E.T. as the little ‘guy’s’ favorite candy. It followed Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and was designed to capitalize on it's forerunner’s success.
Originally the plan was to fill the candy with peanut butter, but the oil leaking into the shell made it soft instead of crunchy. The problem was outsourced to a team of scientists tasked to come up with a solution. They created a peanut-flavored penuche filling. Penuche is a fudge-like candy. It is made with brown sugar, butter and milk.
The next step was to figure out how thick the shell needed to be. The last step was to decide on the colors of the candy coating. It was designed to match the colors of the package and the goal distribution of candies in the packets is 50% orange, 25% brown and 25% yellow.
Although the candy was manufactured by the Hershey Company for the North American market, they are also available in Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Do not get too excited if you suffer from nut allergies - Reese’s Pieces still contain partially defatted peanuts!
The Pieces product line now includes York Peppermint Pattie Pieces, Almond Joy Pieces and Hershey’s Special Dark Pieces.
